1949 Social Control Theory Video Morals Laws and Conformity in Parenting

April 28, 2009 by Parent Tips · Leave a Comment

1949 Social Control Theory Video Morals Laws and Conformity in Parenting

This educational video discusses the three methods of social control in 1950s United States: American customs (what we usually do), American morals (what we should do), and American law (what we must do). A group of teenagers serve as a microcosm of society, with the parents as the governmental authority. The story is about the group and how their teen curfews are causing difficulty at work (they work at the “Teen Canteen”) and at home. The adults are ready to give parenting tips about curfew that mirror American laws. The teenage behavior is pretty tame by today’s standards, and it’s interesting to see how different parenting and parenting resources were in the fifties. To get to the heart of the matter, the teens and the adults responsible for them have a discussion and decide together what to do about this teenage behavior problem. The youngsters make the right choice, falling in line with their parents’ wishes and social conformity in general. This film is an excellent examination of social control theory and how it was perceived and presented in the 1950s.

Westward Ho

Westward Ho

Studio: Lions Gate Home Ent. Release Date: 05/11/2004 Run time: 61 minutes Rating: Nr

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Early Republic Western Worthy Of Notice.
Newborn Republic Pictures utilizes the solid directoral ability of Robert Bradbury, and the presence of John Wayne along with Yakima Canutt and his troupe of stuntriders to produce this strongly scripted film of 1860s vigilante efforts to rid the Far West of outlaw bands that were involved in widespread robbery and cattle rustling. Bradbury, whose skill with Westerns dates back to the early silent period, directs and edits with a solid awareness of suspense, building his typically short scenes with sparse and, at times, stilted dialogue and an eye for proper cast placement which makes excellent use of defined personalities such as Wayne, Frank McGlynn Jr., and Glenn Strange, and gives particular value to the hard-riding stunt performers, who are splendid throughout this well-made (and musical) adventure filmed in California’s Owens Valley, at the base of the Sierra Nevada.

4 Stars Westward Ho
I am a John Wayne fan & have over 70 of his movies in my collection. I agree with Mr. Wu’s description of the plot. It is one of the better of John Wayne’s grade B Republic movies. It is the only movie in which John Wayne “sang” & the dubbed in voice is definitely not John Wayne’s voice. John Wayne did not want to be a singing cowboy & it allowed others like Gene Autry & Roy Rogers to fill that role. I was pleased that the film was reworked & the DVD had good audio & picture.

2 Stars Westward Ho (2 1/2 Stars)
The older surviving brother of a wagon train ambush, seeks revenge on the leader of the gang responsible for the murder of his parents and the kidnapping of his younger brother. Years later, he is the leader of a group of ‘vigilantes’ who oppose lawlessness and unknowingly confronts his ‘long-loss-brother’ who has since learned the tricks-of-the-trade from the outlaws.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars 20 minutes to Affective Parenting: Communication Skills
I think the video was right on.. Gave me a lot of tips and things to do and say when certain situations arrise with my children. I would recommend this and any other materials that you have to anyone.

5 Stars great tips that are easy to remember
I think everyone should have to have some child rearing education. I always here how parents do it differently with child #2 and child #3 - they learned on the job.

I wanted a little cheat sheet so that I could start early with child #1.

This video was so easy to watch and so easy to understand.

It’s not as much disciplining as it is giving information to your children and creating expectations through that information.

When we sat to watch the video, my husband said, “makes perfect sense.”

We have used the tips successfully ever since.

5 Stars Practical, Effective and Builds Relationship
Awesome easy to implement strategies, with immediate results towards positive behavour. These techniques improve relationships with children, are strength based and practical. A strong point of the DVD is the modeling of both scenarios - how not to use a method and how it looks when implemented in a positive way. Short (twenty minutes) and straightforward.

5 Stars wonderful guide
This DVD touches on great communication skills to use in your family–making it easy for everyone in the family to learn how to improve communication and behaviors. I would recommend this to any family who is looking to create a stronger relationship within the family, or for any family who is just looking for suggestions of ways to be more effective in communication.

5 Stars Great for “new” or “used” parents
This DVD is very useful for first-time parents or parents with more than one child. Sometimes we start off great with our parenting but the hassles of every day grind can erode the way we interact with our kids. As a father of 2 boys (ages 7 and 4) I found this DVD useful for helping me to be the parent I want to be while still having my kids become the kids I want them to be. This DVD gives GREAT information on building skills so that I can still parent my kids my way only more EFFECTIVELY.
