Stuck in the Middle Shared Stories And Tips For Caregiving Your Elderly Parents

For more than 75 million people in the United States providing care for an aging parent, Barbara McVicker has released Stuck in the Middle. In her book, McVicker provides real-life short stories by caregivers and a practical guide with tip lists.Like many adult children, McVicker felt “stuck in the middle” of the needs of her children, her aging parents, and her career. As the responsibilities became too overwhelming, she quit her job as a development director for a non-profit agency, eventually devoting 10 years to caregiving her parents.During those years, Barbara searched for a primer on caregiving elderly parents to help guide her through the maze of emotion and information. Because every aspect of taking care of her parents involved reacting to crisis after crisis, she longed for both a support group and information crucial to her role as a caregiver. McVicker has now written that primer.Having interviewed hundreds of caregivers and healthcare professionals, McVicker has compiled information that is essential for all caregivers. Her work also serves as a “support group in a book”, so adult children caregivers do not feel so alone and isolated. The book contains chapters on the Rewards of Caregiving, Grief, Must Have Documents, Effective Ways to Communicate, Universal Conflicts when Caregiving, and much more.Stuck in the Middle has been recognized by the media, the National Hospice Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, medical school researchers, and seminary professors. For more information, please visit www.BarbaraMcVicker.com

5 Stars OLD, YOUNG AND IN THE MIDDLE SHOULD READ & PONDER
Many of “Stuck in the Middle’s” range of true stories reflect my own family’s physical, emotional, financial and spiritual journey caring for our parents. I’m glad my mom honored and personally cared for my paralyzed dad for 13 years. And I’m glad my siblings and I helped Mom remain at home despite debilitating strokes requiring round-the-clock nursing for several years until her death. But the cost, especially on two sets of siblings and their families was huge. We could have used this book to help us all “count the cost” and better conserve our own health and finances while supporting Mom. I am not a natural planner; but “Stuck” prods me to begin to research and lay out a plan for my own future, and to honestly engage my children in this. - So my copy of the book will be highlighted and dog-eared! I now work in a home health company involved in Person Centered Care, and I intend to refer others to “Stuck in the Middle.”

5 Stars Stick in the Middle

5 Stars Stuck in the Middle
Stuck in the Middle: Shared Stories And Tips For Caregiving Your Elderly Parents The stories in “Stuck in the Middle” ring true and give me hope. At my stage in life, my greatest concern is becoming a burden on my daughters. Thank you for your great list of DOs and DON’Ts for those of us who will soon be receiving care.

This book was so meaningful to me that I gave a copy to a dear friend who has been trying to “hold it together” while caring for her 98 year-old mother. In her “Thank You” note she wrote, “I have read “Stuck in the Middle” and, whaddaya know, there are others out there just like me - some are much worse off - I feel fortunate. I appreciate so much your thinking of me with the book - it is comforting to read how others have coped and get the little hints and tidbits that they offer.”

Homeschooling with TLC in the Elementary Grades A Practical Guide with Fun and Effective Teaching Tips

After being a schoolteacher for over six years and a homeschool mom for almost eleven years, I pretty much thought I had the education thing down pat. I’ve read about, heard about, seen, or tried many, many different kinds of curriculum and resources. And I’ve read countless how-to-books on the subject of home education over the years. So what more was there for this veteran homeschool mom of six to discover? The answer to that somewhat silly question arrived in my mailbox packaged in a small envelope. But that little package contained big ideas in the form of the book, Homeschooling with With TLC in the Elementary Grades, by Tamara L. Chilver. Tamara has had years of experience as an elementary teacher, curriculum coordinator, homeschool evaluator, private tutor, and of course, a homeschool mom. She is also the author of Tutoring Your Elementary Child With TLC and founder of Teaching With TLC Ministries. Homeschooling With TLC in the Elementary Grades is a practical, concise guide in an easy-to-read format that is chockfull of ideas, advice, resources, suggestions for scheduling, tips, and techniques that are sure to help new homeschooling parents down the path into the (sometimes seemingly overwhelming) world of home education. But Tamara has also included activities and creative teaching strategies that will inspire and re-motivate even those who’ve been homeschooling for years. Many of the ideas presented in the book would be ideal to supplement any chosen curriculum. So be sure to check out this book for learning the basics…or for just putting a little more fun, creativity, and sparkle into your homeschool days! –Amy O’ Quinn- The Old Schoolhouse

As a homeschooling mom of two, I was thrilled to read this book. I am always looking for fresh ways to add life to our homeschooling day. There’s only so much bookwork they can do before their eyes glaze over and they slip into a coma of boredom. Homeschooling with TLC in the Elementary Grades is designed to remove some of the mystery from homeschooling while giving parents the tools to make homeschooling educational and meaningful. This book has already become dog-eared on my shelf because of the practical tips that I can apply easily. It’s like sitting down and talking with someone who’s a little further down the journey and building my own ideas from her experience. And best of all, it’s a fun, easy read with fantastic cartoons about homeschooling sprinkled throughout. –Cara Putnam- Mary Pride’s Practical Homeschooling

Here is an excellent book for those needing some practical advice on choosing curriculum and enhancing lesson plans. Tamara Chilver will cheer you with her enthusiasm and inspire you with her useful teaching suggestions. She has loaded this book with lots of information. This is not just a how to get started book - she has drawn upon her years as both a public elementary teacher and home educator and poured out her knowledge on how to teach your children effectively. This book is fresh, fun to read, and will provide you with a heap of “golden” teaching nuggets for the elementary grades. You’ll find recommended websites and curriculum titles, and an appendix that includes a list of all the Newberry and Caldecott Medal winners. The author’s friendly tone and no-nonsense approach made this guide easy to read and even more realistic to implement. She is not overly wordy nor does she saturate you with too much information - this paperback at just over 100 pages by no means ever felt thin. If you are in anyway frustrated with how things are going in your homeschool, don’t pull your hair out - get this book. I mentor a lot of newbies in my homeschool circle, and you can bet I’m going to be recommending this resource to them. –Kathy Davis- Homeschoolbuzz.com

This is a Christian based small book of 109 pages with nine chapters. The first two chapters are all about your child and choosing curriculum. She then jumps right into Reading Methods and Writing Strategies followed by Social Studies and Science. Chapters 7 and 8 are about support and encouragement as you homeschool after which she deals with the extras such as music, foreign language, art, etc. in short snippets. Finally, the appendix is filled with a list of Newberry and Caldecott medal winning literature. I found the book quite informative and chock full of resources, ideas, strategies and methods for homeschooling. It is well written, easy to read and the cartoons throughout are good for a chuckle.
